            Freshmen Responsibilities

            Your freshman year is full of new and exciting experiences. It is important that you are aware of all that Mount Carmel has to offer both in academics and extracurriculars. Take advantage of these opportunities in order to set yourself on a strong path to success in high school and college!
            As a freshman, you will meet with your guidance counselor twice a year (once per semester). In the first meeting, your counselor will make sure that your son is adjusting to the demands of high school. Your counselor will also explain the grading system and the importance of maintaining a high GPA. In the second meeting, the counselor will discuss course scheduling and register you in the appropriate level of each subject for sophomore year.

            To prepare and have a successful freshman year you should:
            • Be organized!
            • Keep up With course material in all classes!
            • Get involved in activities whether it be sports or extracurricular
            • Begin to develop goals for your post-high school education and research colleges based on size, location, and what programs the college/university has to offer

            Freshman First Program

            The goal of the Freshman First program is to provide every freshman with a resource to ensure absolute success here at Mount Carmel. We want to make a pro-active effort to assist all freshmen in making a successful transition into high school. This program will maintain relationships with faculty and students throughout the year to respond to questions, address concerns, and offer encouragement whenever needed.

            • Creating and maintaining relationships with the students’ families.
            • Facilitating student/teacher communication.
            • Tutoring
            • Organization assistance
            • Social mentoring
            • Behavioral intervention (in classrooms, common areas, athletics)
            Spiritual assistance including connecting students with our clerical staff

            PLAN Test:
            PLAN helps ninth and tenth graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success and provides information needed to address school districts’ high-priority issues. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years.

            As a pre-ACT test, PLAN is a powerful predictor of success on the ACT Assessment. At the same time, many schools recognize the importance of PLAN testing for all students, as it focuses attention on both career preparation and improving academic achievement.
            Note: your son will take the PLAN test again his sophomore year and will be able to compare his results from freshman year. This will give him a good idea in which areas he has improved and in which areas he needs to focus on to improve.

            RIASEC Test:
            The RIASEC test is used to help guide you in establishing academic and future career goals. Understanding your future career interest not only helps in understanding what major to pursue in college but also how you must prepare yourself in high school to be accepted into a college and/or career of your choice.
